Brainstorm with peer leaders, especially if you are all focusing on the same organizational goal. If you’re concerned that they might not understand your team’s operation, their outside perspective will still be valuable, particularly if you depend on them or they depend on you.
Brainstorm with your team members or with a representative group. Obviously, if they are involved in selecting the goal, they will take ownership of it more readily. Stephen R. Covey once counseled, “No involvement, no commitment.” What better way to commit your team to a goal than to have them help create it.
You can also brainstorm alone. Once the goal is created, you will be able to validate the goal with the team when you develop lead measures.
